The journalist in training and cinephile by vocation Pedro Sales presents his review of the documentary film Favela do Papa on the website Vertentes do Cinema.
“Favela do Papa establishes the historical recovery of an almost forgotten episode through memory and stories. Those now elderly in front of the cameras were young at the end of the 70s and were actively involved in the resistance. Even during the military dictatorship, the community did not fail to protect the right to housing. One community leader happily recalls a protest in which children were at the center of the action, another laughs. remember that he bribed a police officer to finish building his house. The variety of characters and interviewees puts the viewer in contact with different perspectives. Some were “just” residents, doing what they could, others managed, through their influence, to attract attention. to the problem and organize ways to prevent evictions. The composer and filmmaker Sérgio Ricardo, who created the soundtrack for Deus e o Diabo na Terra do Sol (1964), was a resident of Vidigal and was one of the participants in the resistance.”
